  • Camp Soule, Frank Buchanan (guest) wrote 13 years ago:
I grew up at Camp Soule. I learned to swim, canoe and be a life guard in that lake. I learned about honor, being trust worthy and how to follow orders and lead others. I leared to build a fire and cook. I made friends and had some fights. Over 40 years ago I kissed a girl there during summer camp when the familys came to visit. I took everything I learned from Eagle Scout George Grant and his Dad, Scout Master Donald E. Grant with me when I joined the USMC. Their lessons have served me and our Country well. Thank You for my life as I have known it.

I edited this to reflect the new 7-11 gas station, but retained the historical info about it formerly being a train station.

The former Fort Harrison Hotel is where Keith Richards woke up in the middle of the night and wrote the lyrics to the Rolling Stone's "Satisfaction". They were staying at the hotel before playing a concert at Jack Russell Stadium the next day.

a nice enough little playground, but don't let your kids out of your site. There's a lot of transients and crazy people walking around.

Saint Brendan discovered America! Before Columbus, before even the Vikings! "Brendan" means "Smelly Hair" in Gaelic. For more information about Saint Brendan, consult your local library!
  • Clearwater Mall, Mr. Bass (guest) wrote 15 years ago:
Clearwater Mall was the second mall built in Pinellas County (The first being Sunshine Mall), and it totally dominated the area up until Countryside was built 6 or so miles to the north, and took all its traffic away. They tried to re-invent themselves as a 'classy' upscale mall, but that didn't go over very well. Ultimately, the property was sold, closed, and torn down in favor of this sprawling shopping plaza that doesn't really have as much variety as the mall did (I mean, there's not even a magic shop!), and the parking lot is badly organized. Several of the outparcel buildings in the northwest corner of this plaza are left over from the old days. There used to be an automotive garage, a small AMC movie theater, and an Apple Computer Store, back in the days when they still sold Apple ]I[ Computers. (Like early '80s)

this is a neat little shopping center built on pilings over a small lake. It's got a nice feel, and it used to have Penrods in it - a great restaraunt/bar - but the place has never quite been able to make it. I think the only reason it survives is because it's built on water, hence the land is basically worthless as there isn't any land.
